You press the power button and nothing happens. Or the screen stays black. Or it starts booting and then stops. Before you panic, there are a few things worth checking — some Mac startup problems have surprisingly simple fixes.
1. Check the Power Source First
Make sure the charger is firmly connected to the Mac and to the wall. Try a different outlet. If you have another charger, test with that. A MagSafe or USB-C charger that looks fine can sometimes stop delivering power.
For MacBooks: let it charge for at least 15 minutes before attempting to turn it on if the battery was fully drained.
2. Try a Force Restart
Hold the power button down for 10 seconds until the Mac shuts off completely, then press it once to restart. This clears the system state and often resolves hangs during startup.
3. Reset the SMC (Intel Macs Only)
The System Management Controller handles power and thermal functions. On Intel MacBooks with a non-removable battery: shut down, then hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for 10 seconds, release, then press Power. Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3/M4) don’t need this — a force restart covers it.
4. Listen and Watch for Clues
- Nothing at all — Power issue: battery, charger, or logic board.
- Chime but black screen — Often a display issue or startup volume problem.
- Apple logo then stops — macOS startup issue; drive or system files may have a problem.
- Progress bar that stops partway — Software or filesystem corruption; try Recovery Mode.
- Folder with a question mark — Mac can’t find a startup disk; the drive may have failed.
5. Try Recovery Mode
On Intel Macs, hold Command + R at startup. On Apple Silicon, hold the power button until you see “Loading startup options,” then select Options. Recovery Mode lets you run Disk Utility to repair the startup volume or reinstall macOS without erasing your data.
When to Bring It In
If the Mac still won’t start after the above, common causes we find include a failed SSD, logic board issue, bad RAM, liquid damage (even old corrosion), or macOS corruption requiring a clean install with data preserved.
We offer a free diagnostic on Macs that won’t start. Bring it in and we’ll tell you exactly what’s happening and what your options are — including data recovery if the drive has failed.
