Should You Repair or Replace Your Computer? (Honest Guide)

It’s the question we get almost every day at Naples Computers: “Is this thing worth fixing, or should I just buy a new one?”

We’re going to give you an honest answer — which means sometimes we’ll tell you to repair, and sometimes we’ll tell you to replace. There’s no upsell here. Our job is to give you the right advice, not the most expensive one.

The 50% Rule (A Good Starting Point)

A common guideline: if a repair costs more than 50% of what a comparable replacement would cost, replacement usually makes more sense. But this rule has important exceptions, which we’ll cover below.

Factors That Lean Toward Repairing

• The machine is 3 years old or less. Modern computers have a lot of life left at 3 years. A single repair — screen, battery, keyboard — is almost always worth it on a young machine.
• It’s a high-end model. A MacBook Pro or business-class ThinkPad is worth more to repair than a budget laptop because the replacement cost is much higher.
• It’s a software or minor hardware issue. Virus removal, slow performance, a cracked screen, a dead battery — these are all fixable and don’t indicate the machine is failing overall.
• You have important software that’s hard to transfer. Some specialized software is harder to migrate to a new machine than to repair the old one.
• You just want it to last another year or two. An SSD upgrade can extend a 5-year-old computer’s life significantly for a fraction of replacement cost.

Factors That Lean Toward Replacing

• The machine is 6+ years old and multiple things are failing. One repair after another is a sign the hardware is generally tired.
• The motherboard needs replacing on a budget laptop. Motherboard repairs on inexpensive machines often cost more than the computer is worth.
• Windows 10 support ends October 2025. If your machine can’t run Windows 11 and relies on Windows for security, that’s a meaningful factor.
• The repair cost approaches or exceeds the machine’s value. We’ll always tell you this honestly if we see it during diagnosis.
