Spilled Water on Your Laptop? Do These 5 Things Right Now

It happens fast. Coffee, water, a knocked-over glass — and suddenly your laptop is soaked. What you do in the next few minutes can be the difference between a fixable repair and a total loss.

Here’s exactly what to do, in order.

1. Power It Off Immediately

Don’t save your work. Don’t wait for a normal shutdown. Hold the power button down until the screen goes black. Every second the machine stays on while wet increases the risk of a short circuit that can permanently damage the motherboard, GPU, or storage drive.

2. Unplug Everything

Disconnect the charger, any USB devices, external monitors, and if your laptop has a removable battery, take it out. The goal is to remove all power sources as quickly as possible.

3. Turn It Upside Down

Flip the laptop over — open like a tent — and let gravity drain as much liquid as possible away from the internals.

4. Do NOT Do These Things

• Don’t try to power it back on to “see if it still works.” This is how working components get fried.
• Don’t use a hair dryer. Heat can warp internal components and make the damage significantly worse.
• Don’t put it in rice. This is a persistent myth. Rice does almost nothing useful, and while you’re waiting, corrosion from coffee or soda is actively spreading across your circuit board.
• Don’t shake it. This can spread liquid to components that stayed dry.

5. Get It to a Technician the Same Day

Time is the enemy with water damage. Plain water is the most forgiving — but coffee, juice, soda, and anything sugary leave residue that corrodes metal contacts within hours. The faster a technician can open the machine, dry it properly, and clean off any residue, the better your odds.
