“My computer is just slow” is one of the most common things we hear — and it’s almost never the whole story. A computer that runs slowly usually has a specific, fixable cause. Here are the seven we see most often.
1. Malware or Adware Running in the Background
Viruses, adware, and unwanted programs consume CPU and memory constantly. A computer that got noticeably slower over a few weeks — rather than gradually over years — is a red flag for malware. The fix is a full scan, removal, and cleanup.
2. Too Many Startup Programs
Every time you install software, it often adds itself to the startup list. After a few years, a computer might be launching 20–30 programs before you even open a browser. This bogs down boot time and keeps RAM occupied all day. Cleaning up the startup list is a quick fix.
3. A Full Hard Drive
Windows needs free disk space to function efficiently. When your drive gets above 85–90% full, performance degrades noticeably. Clearing junk files and offloading old data can make a big difference.
4. A Failing Hard Drive
This is a serious one. A traditional hard drive (HDD) that’s starting to fail gets slower as it struggles to read data from damaged sectors. If your computer takes forever to open files, and you hear occasional clicking, your hard drive may be dying. Back up your data immediately and bring it in.
5. Outdated or Mismatched Drivers
Outdated graphics drivers, chipset drivers, or storage drivers can significantly impact performance. After a major Windows update, driver conflicts are surprisingly common.
6. Not Enough RAM
If your computer slows down specifically when you have multiple browser tabs or programs open at once, RAM is likely the bottleneck. Modern browsers alone can use 2–4GB. Upgrading from 4GB to 8GB or 16GB RAM is one of the most cost-effective improvements we do.
7. A Spinning Hard Drive (The Upgrade That Changes Everything)
If your computer still has a traditional hard drive, replacing it with an SSD is the single biggest performance upgrade possible. Boot times drop from 2–3 minutes to under 30 seconds. Everything opens faster. The difference is dramatic and usually makes even a 5–7 year old machine feel current.
