Windows Update Wont Install? Try These

Failed Windows Updates are frustrating and common. Most can be fixed by clearing the update cache or running the update troubleshooter.

Try These In Order

Failed updates usually trace to one of three things: corrupt download, insufficient disk space, or a service issue.

  • Restart and try Windows Update again
  • Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
  • Free up disk space (need 20GB+ for major updates)
  • Clear Windows Update cache (stop service, delete SoftwareDistribution folder)
  • Run sfc /scannow and DISM repair
  • Pause updates for a week, then resume
  • For specific update KB failures — manually download from Microsoft Catalog
  • For repeated failures — your system may have file corruption
