Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, which means no more security updates, feature updates, or technical support from Microsoft. This guide walks through your three options: a free upgrade to Windows 11, a new PC, or buying time with the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.
What end of support means
Your PC still runs. It just stops getting fixed.
Your options now that Windows 10 is out of support, step by step
1Upgrade to Windows 11, for free
If your PC runs Windows 10, version 22H2, and meets the minimum hardware requirements, the upgrade costs nothing.

2Not eligible? A new Windows 11 PC
Older hardware often can’t meet the requirements. A new PC comes with Windows 11, and years of support ahead of it.

3Need more time? Enroll in ESU
The Extended Security Updates program keeps the security fixes coming on your current PC, through October 2027.

★Not sure which option is right for you?
We’ll check if your PC can upgrade, help you pick a new one, or get you enrolled in ESU, whichever fits.

How to enroll in ESU
- Make sure you’re on version 22H2 — With the latest Windows updates already installed
- Go to Settings, Windows Update — And select “Enroll now” if the option appears
- Sign in with a Microsoft account — One license covers up to 10 devices on that account
Choosing to do nothing? Know the risk.
- No more security patches — New viruses and scams can exploit holes that never get fixed
- Avoid banking and sensitive accounts — On an unsupported PC, until you upgrade or enroll in ESU
- No technical support from Microsoft — Any issues are yours, or ours, to solve from here

Frequently asked questions
What actually happens when Windows 10 is out of support?
Your PC keeps working, but Microsoft no longer provides security updates, feature updates, or technical support for it. Without security fixes, the PC becomes a growing target for viruses and malware as new vulnerabilities are discovered but never patched.
Can I upgrade my Windows 10 PC to Windows 11 for free?
Yes, if it’s running Windows 10 version 22H2 and meets the minimum hardware requirements. Check by going to Settings, Windows Update; if your PC qualifies, the option to upgrade will appear there.
What is the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program?
ESU is a Microsoft program that continues providing critical security updates for an enrolled Windows 10 PC through October 12, 2027, while you transition to Windows 11. It doesn’t include feature updates or technical support.
How much does Windows 10 ESU cost?
There are three ways to enroll: at no cost if you sync your PC settings, at no cost by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or with a one-time $30 purchase that covers up to 10 devices on the same Microsoft account.
